Hope & Opportunity: Red Earth Trading Co.

A relatively young, globally-conscious pop-up retail store in Hillsboro Village, Red Earth Trading Co. is the kind of place you want to spend your Saturday. With stuffed foxes, quail and other brightly-feathered fowl posed and perched, praire grass in the window and a cowhide rug in the entryway, there is a sense of tamed wilderness about the store.

The nomadic boutique purveys artisan jewelry, leather goods and decorations made by individuals, families and communities in East Africa. The best part: everything is fashionable, reasonably priced and all profits return to the non-profit organization Know.Think.Act. for community development. It’s a win-win-win situation.

I am still dreaming about Isadora, a brass collar necklace with hammered paddles dangling, and a pumpkin-colored leather travel bag. I may be making a trip back sooner than I anticipated.
